Series background & context

Wicked Deceptions is an earlier Joanna Shupe series, set in England rather than New York, but a lot of her lasting interests are already here. You get aristocratic pressure, sexual reputation, women who are smarter than the rules around them, and plots built on disguise, secrecy, and second chances. The tone is a little more openly melodramatic than the Gilded Age books, in a good way.

Everyone is pretending to be something.

That idea starts immediately in The Courtesan Duchess. Julia has been ignored by her husband for years and decides the only way to secure her future is to learn from a courtesan, travel to Venice, and seduce him in disguise. It is bold, improper, and exactly the kind of premise that lets Shupe ask what happens when a woman uses scandal as a tool instead of simply surviving it.

The Harlot Countess keeps the focus on public image. Maggie has reinvented herself as a political cartoonist working under a male pen name, even as society still clings to a humiliating rumor from her past. When Simon Barrett, the man she believes failed her years ago, comes back into her life, old hurt and present desire collide. It is a book about reputation, but also about how badly the world can misread a woman and how hard it is to reclaim your own story.

Then The Lady Hellion pushes into rougher territory. Lady Sophia Barnes moves through London's seedier districts dressed as a man, trying to fight for people with far less protection than she has. To do that, she needs help from Damien Beecham, the man who once broke her heart. That gives the series a stronger adventure thread while keeping the emotional stakes close.

What links the books is not just deception for its own sake. These heroines are not playing games because they are bored. They are trying to secure futures, do meaningful work, avoid ruin, or protect people who would otherwise be ignored. The disguises and hidden motives matter because the women have very few clean, safe options.

If you are used to Shupe's Gilded Age work, this series shows where some of her favorite patterns began. Strong desire, sharp heroines, men who underestimate them, and a clear interest in how public judgment shapes private life. Read Wicked Deceptions if you want historical romance with masks, scandal, hurt feelings that still sting, and women brave enough to start trouble on purpose.
