Whiteout Books in Order

Whiteout is one of those crime-comic premises that sounds instantly strong because it is. Put a U.S. Marshal in Antarctica, surround her with ice, isolation, and a tiny pool of suspects, and you have a setting that turns every problem into something sharper. Rucka and Steve Lieber make the most of that from page one.

The lead is Carrie Stetko, and she is exactly the kind of protagonist Rucka writes well, capable, difficult, funny, and carrying damage she does not advertise. In the first story, a murder on the ice forces her into an investigation where geography is as dangerous as the killer. In Melt, the focus widens, but the setting remains just as hostile and important.

Antarctica is not a gimmick here. It shapes everything. Travel is hard. Help is far away. Weather can kill you as efficiently as a bullet. That gives the books a constant survival edge, even in quieter scenes. There is also a nice contrast between the blank white landscape and the very human greed, fear, and compromise driving the crimes.

These are compact stories, but they feel complete. They deliver mystery, tension, and strong character work without overstaying their welcome.

If you want Greg Rucka in a sharp, contained crime mode, with a great setting and an even better lead, Whiteout is one of the cleanest entry points.
