Series background & context

The Whispering Witch Mysteries moves Mildred Abbott's love of mystery, corgis, food, and found family to New Orleans, then adds real magic to the mix. The series follows Maeve Hawthorn, a fantasy author whose life changes when the witches she writes about turn out not to be fictional at all.

They are not happy with her.

In Gossiping About Grimoires, Maeve travels to New Orleans for a book signing with her corgi, Mischief. The trip goes badly when she is abducted by witches who believe her novels have exposed their world. Before she can make sense of what is happening, a murder leaves Maeve tied to powers she does not understand and makes her a suspect in a dangerous supernatural community.

Maeve begins as someone who is smart but sheltered, used to living through stories rather than stepping into danger herself. New Orleans forces her to adapt. She has to learn what magic can do, whom she can trust, and why powerful people are watching her so closely. Mischief is at her side throughout, and their bond becomes much more important as Maeve learns the rules of her new life.

The city is not just a backdrop. Its courtyards, old buildings, food, local businesses, and layers of history help shape the mood of the series. Abbott writes the magical world as something woven into the everyday city, hidden in familiar streets but governed by old loyalties, rivalries, and rules that outsiders may not survive breaking.

Magic has consequences here.

These books are not quite traditional cozies. They still have humor, recipes, close relationships, and an animal companion, but the danger is sharper and the larger story carries across the series. Maeve faces supernatural factions, secrets about magic, and questions about where she belongs. As she gains allies, the books also become a story about building a home and finding family where she did not expect it.

Start with Gossiping About Grimoires. It introduces Maeve, Mischief, and the hidden magical side of New Orleans. Continue in order with Verifying About Vampires, Snitching About Spirits, Dishing About Divination, and Commenting About Curses for the full arc, since each case reveals more about Maeve's powers and the dangerous world around her.
