That matters because Holmberg treats Whimbrel House like a real character, not just a setting with tricks. Doors lock when they should not. Rooms react to moods and memories. Old magic turns ordinary domestic space into a source of mystery, irritation, and danger. In Keeper of Enchanted Rooms and Heir of Uncertain Magic, the story balances gentle romance, haunted-house weirdness, and a slow uncovering of family history. Hulda is organized and grounded. Merritt is thoughtful, bewildered, and trying to make sense of a world that has suddenly become much stranger.

As the series grows, it widens beyond one unruly estate. Merritt starts to understand his own uncanny inheritance, while institute politics, old enemies, and questions about who should control magic begin pressing in from all sides. One of the most important continuing figures is Owein, a soul-shifter with a very unusual problem and a gift for stealing scenes. What begins as a house mystery gradually becomes a larger story about bloodlines, wizardry, and the cost of preserving magical power by force.

Later books lean even more into found family. Merritt and Hulda's relationship deepens, the supporting cast matters more and more, and the series starts following Owein's future almost as closely as Merritt's past. Queen Victoria, necromancers, druids, and other enchanted houses all enter the picture, but the emotional center stays close to home. Even when the stakes get larger, the books keep asking the same question: what makes a place, or a person, safe enough to belong to?

The tone is one of the best things about these books. They are cozy in some ways, with candlelight, practical magic, and people figuring out how to live together, but they are never sleepy. Curses, dangerous spells, and old grudges are always nearby. The magic feels rule-bound, old-fashioned, and a little fussy, which fits the setting beautifully. If you like haunted houses that can feel cranky, protective, funny, and frightening all at once, this series knows exactly what to do with them.
