When Rivals Play Books in Order

When Rivals Play is B.B. Reid's big interconnected new adult series, set around Blackwood Keep, Brynwood Academy, and the long shadow of a gang feud. Each book follows a different couple, but these stories are stitched together by friendship, class tension, family secrets, and the sense that nobody in this circle gets to stay untouched by the war around them.

It starts with The Peer and the Puppet, where Four Archer, a street-racing outsider, lands in a mansion she does not trust and immediately clashes with Ever McNamara, the rich golden boy across the hall. That book sets the tone for the whole series: sharp banter, power games, angry attraction, and young people acting bigger and braver than their years because the adults around them have already failed them.

Blackwood Keep looks polished, but it is not safe.

From there, Reid opens the cast rather than leaving it behind. The Moth and the Flame follows Lou and Wren into a slower friends-to-lovers story with real danger closing in. Evermore gives Four and Ever a short return visit. The Punk and the Plaything digs into long-simmering hurt between Jamie and Bee. The Prince and the Pawn brings Tyra and Vaughn to the front and ties together the larger fallout that has been building since book one.

What makes the series work is the mix of romance and ongoing plot. These are connected standalones, but they read best in order, because the gang conflict keeps moving, and so do the friendships, betrayals, and shifting loyalties inside the group. Reid likes to let side characters stay messy until it is their turn, which means one book can completely change how you see someone from the last.

Everyone wants freedom, but nobody gets it cheaply.

The tone sits somewhere between prep school drama, dark coming-of-age romance, and romantic suspense. There are rich kids, broke kids, secret deals, old wounds, and plenty of heat, but there is also a lot of fear underneath the swagger. If you like connected casts, emotional mess, and romance that comes with baggage, this series is a good place to see what Reid does well.
