The Empty Safe Mystery
by David Pearson
2023
A building society manager is found murdered in her flat above the branch, the safe below cleaned out. To prove the killing is more than a simple heist, DI Vikki Kirkby follows the missing money through Wexford's streets while fending off a superintendent determined to clip her wings.
Series background & context
The Wexford Homicides introduce DI Vikki Kirkby, a young Dublin detective who has been pushed out of the capital after taking the blame for a superior's mistake. Her new posting in Wexford, on Ireland's south-east coast, is meant to be a quiet backwater. It does not stay that way for long.
In The Ferry Port Mystery Kirkby arrives to find herself the only female detective inspector in the local Garda station and not exactly welcomed. When an elderly couple die in what others are quick to label a murder suicide, she is the one voice insisting that the scene does not add up. Following her doubts leads her toward the busy ferry port at Rosslare, hidden tensions in the freight business and the possibility that her supposed punishment posting might cost more lives if she lets it slide.
The second book, The Empty Safe Mystery, sees Kirkby investigating the death of a building society manager who is found murdered in her flat above the branch. The safe has been cleaned out, yet the level of violence suggests more than a straightforward robbery. As Kirkby follows the money trail she has to confront not only the killers but also a superintendent who seems determined to undermine her.
Both investigations force her to prove herself in a station full of sceptical colleagues, push back when her instincts are dismissed and decide how much to trust a local businessman who might be more than just a friendly face. The series makes strong use of its setting, from the rhythms of a small county town to the comings and goings of ferries and freight traffic along the south coast.
Like Pearson's other work, these books stay firmly in police-procedural territory, with clear language, steady pacing and a focus on teamwork rather than lone-wolf heroics. Readers follow Kirkby as she balances learning a new patch with trying to rebuild a damaged reputation, all while dealing with crimes that are anything but small.
If you enjoy stories about capable detectives proving themselves in hostile workplaces, the Wexford Homicides offer that arc against a distinctly Irish maritime backdrop.
