Chasing the Horizon

by Mary Connealy

2024

Series background & context

A Western Light follows a rolling community on the move: wagon trains heading west with people who are just as desperate to flee their pasts as they are to find new land. Rather than parking in one town, the series tracks danger, faith, and romance along the rutted trail itself.

In Chasing the Horizon, Beth Rutledge discovers her controlling father plans to have her committed to an asylum. She stages a daring rescue of her mother, who has already been locked away, and the two women join a wagon train under assumed identities as “sisters.” Scout Jake Holt quickly senses that Beth and her companion are hiding something. As rumors fly about Pinkerton agents hunting wanted criminals, trust becomes a matter of survival.

Toward the Dawn picks up with other members of the train who are also running—from grief, from guilt, or from people determined to drag them back. Dangers include not only weather and rivers, but schemes brewing in the wagons themselves.

By Into the Sunset, the journey has reshaped loyalties and revealed true characters. Long-buried secrets come out, new towns beckon, and the question becomes not just where these travelers will settle, but who they will be when they finally stop.

The series leans into the liminal nature of the trail: everyone is between what was and what might be. Connealy uses that in-between space to explore courage, forgiveness, and the slow process of choosing a different story for yourself, all while keeping readers turning pages with outlaws, stampedes, and stolen moments of tenderness beside campfires.
