Wessex Thrillers Books in Order

The Wessex books are Bentley's compact police procedural series, and they are built to do two things at once. Each novella gives you a complete case, but the books also connect through the pressures facing a new regional force and the people trying to make it work. That larger thread gives the series more momentum than the short format might suggest.

At the center are detectives Root and Branch, with DCI Graham Briar and Chief Constable Rosalie Barry helping shape the wider picture. The Folly of Youth starts with two young deaths that may or may not be connected. The Confessor adds social pressure and class influence when an aristocratic family wants results fast. Root & Branch gives the newly formed constabulary its first headline murder and forces the team to prove itself in public.

Then the cases keep widening.

Dogged opens with a bizarre killing by bow and arrow and a suspect pool that keeps slipping away. The RV Detective brings in Bartholomew Gaines, a retired policeman turned blogger and true crime personality, after a terror attack drags him into a live investigation. Across the series, the crimes range from intimate and local to politically awkward and nationally sensitive, but the emotional center stays with the officers trying to do the job under scrutiny.

The setting matters here in a quieter way than in the London books. Wessex is about shires, local politics, reputation, public confidence, and the strain of building a new institution while already under fire. Bentley seems to enjoy the tension between old county rhythms and new policing structures. That gives the books a grounded, procedural feel even when the cases turn strange.

If you like short crime fiction with recurring investigators and a bit of institutional drama, this series is easy to get into. Reading in order is the best move, because the character relationships and the broader arc of the force land more strongly that way. These are brisk, readable police stories with enough continuity to keep you moving from one case to the next.
