Welcome Back, Kotter Books in Order

William Johnston's Welcome Back, Kotter novels follow the unruly students known as the Sweathogs at Buchanan High in Brooklyn. Vinnie Barbarino, Freddie Washington, Juan Epstein, and Arnold Horshack are loud, inventive, and usually one step away from a new school problem.

Their teacher, Gabe Kotter, knows the act because he used to be one of them.

Kotter has returned to Buchanan to teach a remedial class, and he tries to give the boys a fair chance without letting them run the room. That balance drives the series. The Sweathogs may look like a hopeless case to other adults, but Kotter sees their humor, loyalty, and potential. He also knows they can turn a simple assignment into a daylong disaster.

The novels use school as a launching point for comic adventures. A class project, a newspaper assignment, a school event, a protest, or a personal decision can put the group under pressure. Washington is usually the sharp observer in the group. Kotter, along with his wife Julie, provides the adult perspective, though the adults are not always prepared for the logic of the Sweathogs.

At Buchanan High, a good idea is only the beginning of the problem.

These books are light sitcom tie-ins rather than a continuous school saga. Each one offers a separate misadventure and can be read on its own, but starting with Sweathog Trail gives readers the clearest introduction to the group and their world. The later books are especially enjoyable once the characters' habits and rivalries are familiar.

Expect quick dialogue, affectionate teasing, and stories that treat the Sweathogs as more than their classroom reputation. Under the jokes, the series is about a teacher who refuses to give up on his students, even when they make that decision very difficult.
