Waxways begins with a setup that feels part dark academia, part survival thriller, and part social revenge story. The setting is Kathor, a city where power is tied to magic, noble houses, and long-standing inequality. Balmerick University trains some of the best young wizards in the city, but talent alone does not level the field. Who your family is, what quarter you come from, and which house might claim you all matter just as much.

That is where Ren Monroe comes in. She is brilliant, poor, and painfully aware that excellence does not guarantee safety. All her work at Balmerick is supposed to help her climb into a better future, preferably one that protects her and her mother. Then Theo Brood, rich, gifted, and tied to one of Kathor’s most powerful families, collides with her path. A public waxway portal mishap sends Ren, Theo, and four other students far from campus, with one of them dead before the journey even properly begins.

Things get bad quickly.

The first book, A Door in the Dark, traps its characters in the wilderness with limited magic, too many secrets, and something dangerous following them through the dark. That gives the series a sharp first hook. You get monster tension, survival decisions, and the constant question of who among the group can really be trusted. Reintgen uses that trek to do more than scare the cast. He also lays out the class pressures and private grudges that each student brought with them from Kathor.

What makes Waxways interesting is what happens after the group gets home. The later books do not simply repeat the stranded-in-the-woods formula. Instead, the story turns back toward the city and lets all that buried tension bloom into politics, ambition, and revenge. In A Whisper in the Walls, Ren gets closer to House Brood as she tries to avenge her father and navigate a bond with Theo that makes every choice messier. New allies, including the dangerous Tin Vori siblings, make it clear that changing Kathor will require more than clever survival.

By A Burning in the Bones, the fight has widened into a direct struggle over the city’s future. Ren and Theo have influence, but the other great houses do not intend to give up power easily. Add in a mysterious disease and a city whose magic is deeply tied to its social order, and the stakes become both personal and structural. The series keeps asking whether a corrupt system can be reformed from inside, or whether it will crush anyone who tries.

If you like fantasy that mixes knife-edge suspense with class politics, this is a strong fit. The mood stays tense, the magic feels specific, and Ren is the kind of lead who can carry both a chase scene and a grudge. Waxways starts with six students lost in the dark, but it grows into something broader, a story about survival, power, and what it takes to drag a city toward change.
