Garden Spells

by Sarah Addison Allen

2007

In small-town Bascom, North Carolina, caterer Claire Waverley hides behind her enchanted garden and its prophetic apple tree—until her runaway sister Sydney returns with a young daughter, forcing the family’s long-suppressed magic and secrets into the open.

Series background & context

The Waverley Family books take place in the small town of Bascom, North Carolina, where the Waverley women are known for being just a little odd. Their old Queen Anne house sits behind a fence, hiding a garden that never quite behaves like a normal garden.

At its center stands an apple tree that throws fruit at people and shows whoever eats an apple the most important moment of their future.

Garden Spells, the first book, introduces Claire and Sydney Waverley, two sisters who reacted to that legacy in opposite ways. Claire stayed, turning the family’s herbs and flowers into a catering business that quietly nudges people’s moods. Sydney ran as far as she could, only to come back years later with her young daughter Bay and a history she doesn’t want to explain. The story circles around their uneasy reunion, the mysterious neighbor next door, and the way the Waverley magic insists on pulling them toward the lives they’re meant to live.

In First Frost, the second book, time has moved on. Claire is now running a small candy company that uses the same enchanted ingredients, but success has made her doubt her gift. Sydney is happily married but aching for another child, and teenage Bay has fallen for a boy who refuses to be associated with the strange Waverleys. As first frost approaches—always the season when the apple tree acts up—a stranger with ties to the past arrives in Bascom and tests the family’s hard‑won stability.

Across both books the magic is never about spells and wands. It shows up in small ways: haircuts that can change the way someone feels about themselves, flowers that bring back a memory, a house that locks out people it doesn’t like.

The enchantment adds color, but the heart of the series is the relationships between sisters, cousins, lovers, and neighbors who have known each other all their lives.

The tone is gentle, funny in places, and grounded in day‑to‑day details. Meals are cooked, candy is poured into molds, gardens are weeded, and people argue on porches while thunderstorms roll in. Underneath, though, the books wrestle with big questions about where we come from and whether we can ever really leave a hometown that has decided we’re its own.

You can dip into either title on its own, but reading them in order lets you watch the Waverleys grow up, make mistakes, and slowly accept the peculiar gifts they were born with. Together, Garden Spells and First Frost offer a small, self‑contained world you can return to whenever you want the feel of a Southern family story with a soft halo of magic.
