Wars: The Battle of Phobos Books in Order

Wars: The Battle of Phobos is a different corner of Michael Robertson's work. It is not a solo mystery series, but a shared-world science fiction saga, and Robertson comes in as part of the final volume, Codettas. If you land here after the Baker Street books, expect a sharp turn in scale. London offices and odd letters give way to fleet politics, armed factions, and a solar system edging toward open war.

The setup is big but easy to follow. Humanity has split into three major camps. Earth has hardened into a corporate state. Mars has broken away, renamed itself Gongen, and is governed by the artificial intelligence Shocho. Out on the edges are the Mavericks, people who want little to do with either power and survive in the rougher, lawless reaches of space. The coming battle around Phobos, the Martian moon in the title, grows out of that fracture.

The series tracks that pressure through a few central figures rather than one single hero. Rogan Hallard keeps trying to stop bad actors and hold together some version of peace between Earth and Gongen, even when both sides make that look impossible. Higen Orochito is tied by family history and duty to Shocho, which means the fate of Mars is personal for him in a way it is not for anyone else. Jack Wilgress comes from the Maverick side, an ex-soldier and outlaw survivor whose problems are usually immediate, physical, and impossible to solve with a speech.

Nobody gets an easy side to root for.

That is part of the appeal. This is military and political space opera, but it is driven as much by divided loyalties and clashing systems as by battles. The books move through multiple viewpoints and were built as linked novella collections, so the pace is brisk and the perspective keeps shifting. Preludes lays out the fault lines. Stretti takes the same characters and pushes them closer to disaster. Codettas is the payoff, where diplomacy has failed and the long-threatened war finally breaks into the open over Mars.

There is a bit of publishing history behind it too. The Phobos storyline began earlier, was later reissued and completed under the WARSONG banner, and grows out of the larger WARS setting. You do not need to know every corner of that universe to follow the main arc, but it helps to know that this is a lived-in setting with old grudges, established factions, and fans who had been waiting a long time to see the final volume arrive.

So what should you expect from Michael Robertson's piece of it? Think contribution rather than ownership. In Codettas, he is one of several writers carrying the saga to the finish line, and his short story lands best when you see it as part of a larger build toward war. If you enjoy faction politics, layered world-building, and science fiction that keeps one eye on personal choice even during giant historical moments, this series has plenty to offer.
