Series background & context

The Waratah Inn is the series that introduced many readers to Lilly Mirren, and it still feels like a clear statement of what she does best. Set in Cabarita Beach on the New South Wales coast, it combines family drama, emotional healing, romance, and a long-running mystery from the past.

At the center are the Summer sisters, Kate, Reeda, and Bindi. They come back together after their grandmother dies and discover that they have inherited the Waratah Inn together. That is awkward enough on its own, because the sisters are estranged and their lives have gone in very different directions. Then Kate finds their grandmother's journals, and the story opens into something much bigger.

Those journals are the heart of the series. Through them, the sisters uncover hidden chapters of their grandmother's life, especially the mystery surrounding Charlie Jackson. The books gradually connect the present-day inn renovation and sibling tension with love, loss, wartime history, and choices made long before the sisters were born.

The result is a family saga with strong forward motion. The Waratah Inn lays the groundwork, One Summer in Italy follows Reeda on a personal and historical search, and The Summer Sisters brings Bindi and the broader mystery to the front. Christmas at the Waratah Inn then offers a gentler visit back to the setting through a holiday romance.

Readers who like coastal Australian settings, multiple points of view, and secrets that unfold across a series tend to do very well here. The inn itself becomes more than a business. It turns into the place where the sisters reconnect, where the past speaks up, and where home slowly starts to mean something again.
