War of the Archons Books in Order

The War of the Archons trilogy begins in a world where magic has been gone for a century. Nations have fought, borders have shifted, and people have built new lives around the assumption that the old supernatural forces are finished. That belief does not last. When magic returns, it does not arrive gently, and the old gods are close behind it.

The first book, A Demon in Silver, follows Livia Harrow, a young farm woman whose sudden magical ability makes her valuable, vulnerable, and hunted. Several groups want to find her, including powerful political agents, religious extremists, and people who see magic as a weapon. Mercenary Josten Cade is also drawn into the chase, giving the opening story a rougher, more skeptical perspective alongside Livia's frightening introduction to a much larger world.

Ford uses Livia's situation to show what a society does when its assumptions collapse. Magic has become the stuff of rumor and superstition, so its return creates fear as well as opportunity. The old gods, known as the Archons, have their own rivalries and plans. Mortals are not simply watching a divine conflict unfold. They are the ground on which it is fought.

The later books broaden the story across the Cordral Extent and beyond. In Hangman's Gate, the Iron Tusk gathers an army and threatens the fortress of Dunrun, leaving a small and ill-prepared force to stand in his path. The Spear of Malice moves to the city-state of Kantor, where a royal family struggles to stay neutral while war builds around them and threats grow from inside their own walls.

The gods are back, and people have to live with the consequences.

The series has an ensemble feel, shifting among soldiers, rulers, mercenaries, young people discovering power, and survivors who know more than they first admit. The tension comes from both the huge scale of the conflict and the immediate problems facing each character: defend a fortress, protect a child ruler, find allies, escape a pursuer, or decide whether an offer of help is really a trap.

Expect dark epic fantasy with battles, uneasy alliances, political maneuvering, and supernatural forces that are powerful but far from reliable. Start with A Demon in Silver and continue in order through Hangman's Gate and The Spear of Malice. The books build toward a wider view of the world and the dangerous war being waged through it.
