Making Their Vows

by Jessa Kane

2021

Good girl Grace from an elite prep school falls hard for North, a bruised underground fighter who survives one illegal bout at a time. Their secret, all consuming teenage romance burns hot enough to defy her controlling father, but every stolen kiss pushes them closer to catastrophe.

Series background & context

The Vows duet is Jessa Kane’s take on swoony, star crossed young love that actually gets to grow up. Across Making Their Vows and its follow up novella Renewing Their Vows, she follows one couple from the moment they lock eyes as teenagers through marriage, danger and the choice to hold on when things get difficult.

In Making Their Vows, Grace Foster is a scholarship student at an elite Boston prep school. She lives in a world of manicured lawns, legacy admissions and a father who expects obedience more than happiness. North Whitlock is everything that world is not, a brutally beautiful underground fighter who earns money in back room rings and comes home with his knuckles split. When their gazes meet for the first time, Grace feels her life slip sideways. North, who has spent his youth surviving rather than dreaming, suddenly wants something soft and untouchable.

They have every reason to stay away from each other. Grace’s father would rather throw money at a problem than see his daughter with a dangerous boy from the wrong side of town. North is used to keeping people at arm’s length so his violence does not splash onto anyone else. The novella compresses months of secret meetings, arguments, stolen kisses and bad decisions into a tight, breathless package. Every time they try to walk away, the pull drags them back, until a final act of defiance changes both of their lives.

Renewing Their Vows picks up several years later. Grace and North are now married, living in a small apartment, trying to build something normal out of a bond that was anything but. She is a new teacher, pouring herself into her students. He is working his way up the boxing ranks, hoping for a shot that will let them finally breathe easy. For a while, their biggest fights are over schedules and exhaustion.

Old ghosts have other plans. A Boston gangster Grace helped put in prison is out on parole and hungry for revenge. The easiest way to hurt her is to go through North, demanding that the fighter work off her perceived debt by doing a job that could destroy everything they have built. North decides the only way to keep Grace and their future child safe is to push her away without explaining why.

The second novella turns that decision into emotional fuel. Grace feels betrayed and abandons the life they built, not realizing the extent of the sacrifice he is making behind the scenes. When the truth comes out, both of them have to decide whether their teenage promises still matter now that mortgages and mortal danger are in play.

Compared to some of Kane’s more outrageous setups, the Vows books are relatively grounded. They still have her trademarks, instant attraction, intense devotion and explicit scenes, but there is more room here for regret, fear and the everyday work of staying married. This page walks you through both halves of Grace and North’s journey, explains the best reading order and points out why many long time fans recommend starting here if you want to see her at her most emotional.
