Author bio
Vivian Arend grew up in Alberta, spending her early years in places including Calgary, Sherwood Park, and Tofield. That background shows up all through her fiction. Ranch country, mountain weather, small towns, and the push and pull of family life are not just backdrops in her books, they are part of how her characters think and fall in love.
Writing came later.
Arend has said the 2007 NaNoWriMo challenge was the jolt that got her started, and once she discovered ebooks and romance in 2008, she moved fast. In April of that year she began the story that became Wolf Signs, her first published book, which arrived in 2009. What looks from the outside like a quick launch was really the start of a very steady, very busy career.
She writes across a few different corners of romance: contemporary, western, romantic suspense, and light paranormal. The genres shift, but some things stay constant. Her books usually center on families, close friend groups, or tightly knit communities. There is often humor in the middle of the heat, and even the most confident characters tend to have blind spots that keep them human.
Readers who start with Wolf Signs often stick around for the northern setting as much as the romance. The Granite Lake and Takhini books use the Yukon, Alaska, and the wider north in a way that feels physical and lived in. There are cabins, wilderness flights, harsh weather, pack politics, and a lot of people discovering that fate is not especially interested in their carefully laid plans.
Her western romances are just as central to her work.
Rocky Mountain Heat helped open the Six Pack Ranch world, a long-running Alberta cowboy setting built around the Coleman family. Later books such as A Rancher's Heart carried that same love of ranch life into Heart Falls, another interconnected small-town world. These stories are part of why Arend has such a loyal readership. People come for the romance, but they stay for the sense of place, the family noise, and the feeling that everyone in town might get a story eventually.
She can write faster and sharper when she wants to as well. The Adrenaline Search and Rescue books bring in dangerous missions and romantic suspense, while the DreamMakers novels she co-wrote with Elle Kennedy lean lighter, with ex-military heroes, quick banter, and plenty of chemistry. Across all of it, she keeps the focus on emotional payoff instead of empty spectacle.
More than three million copies of her books have sold worldwide, and her work has appeared on both the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. Even so, the appeal of her fiction is pretty down to earth. Her stories are sexy and emotional, but they are also interested in chores, weather, loyalty, shared meals, sore feelings, and the slow work of making a life with another person.
Now Arend lives in British Columbia, Canada, with her husband of many years, whom she has called the inspiration for every hero. She has also written about traveling widely with her husband and family, sometimes far outside the comforts of everyday life. That mix of adventure and domestic steadiness feels like a good summary of her books too. Big feelings, real work, and happily-ever-afters that have to be earned.
