Nate Webber heads west carrying a secret that could cost him everything, and Elsie Brookes, a ranger's daughter with plans of her own, ends up teaching men in the CCC camp. Suspicious fires add mystery, but the stronger through line is the question of what people do when shame, poverty, and hope are all packed into the same season of life.

Across the series, Barnett keeps returning to a few things: people at turning points, jobs that demand courage, and places worth protecting. The tone is warm and romantic, but there is usually some extra edge, a threat to the park, a secret from the past, or a future that might collapse if the wrong choice is made. The books are connected by theme rather than plot, so you can read them on their own, but publication order lets you watch Barnett build out her larger fascination with the early national park system.
