The Village of Primm series follows Holly Banks, a wife, mother, and aspiring filmmaker who moves with her husband, Jack, and their young daughter, Ella, into a wealthy, tightly managed community called Primm. On the surface, the village looks ideal, with admired schools, polished homes, planned events, and a topiary-filled sense of order. Beneath that neat exterior, though, nearly everything feels competitive, performative, and just a little strange.

Holly is not built to glide through that world without making a scene.

In Holly Banks Full of Angst, she arrives already off balance and quickly finds herself on the wrong side of PTA president Mary-Margaret St. James, one of the series’ best recurring troublemakers. Holly is trying to be a good mother, protect her marriage, and figure out what to do with her unused film degree, all while Primm keeps handing her new ways to feel out of place. That clash between ordinary family stress and exaggerated social pressure drives the whole series.

The second book, The Peculiar Fate of Holly Banks, keeps the same continuing cast and pushes the story further. Holly is still juggling home life, ambition, and the constant pressure to look like she has everything under control when a fresh mystery pulls her in. Her Labrador, Struggle, helps kick things off by unearthing an old artifact, and soon Holly is tangled in a local dispute that reaches beyond school politics and into the history of the town itself.

That mystery thread matters, but this is never a grim series.

What really links these books is Primm itself. The village is funny, frustrating, beautiful, and a little oppressive, the kind of place where appearances can feel like a second job. Valerie uses that setting to poke at perfection culture, especially the version aimed at mothers: curated homes, social media gloss, school expectations, and the quiet fear that everyone else is coping better than you are. Holly’s neighbors may look polished, but the series keeps revealing private messes behind public performance.

Tone-wise, expect women’s fiction with humor, satire, and a soft undercurrent of mystery. The supporting cast can be larger than life, but Holly’s worries about belonging, work, family, and self-respect keep the books grounded. These novels share continuing characters and are best read in order, though each has its own main problem to solve. If you like suburbia with bite, nosy neighbors, PTA warfare, and characters who learn the hard way that perfect is mostly a costume, Village of Primm is a good fit.
