Series background & context
Viking I is where Sandra Hill’s Norse world begins. The series opens with The Reluctant Viking, a time-travel romance that sends modern Ruby Jordan into the past, where she meets Thork, a Viking who looks far too much like the husband she is trying not to lose. That first book sets the pattern: outrageous premise, emotional second chance, and plenty of culture clash.
The next books expand the world through related warriors, families, and women who refuse to behave the way the men expect. The Outlaw Viking brings Dr. Rain Jordan into a dangerous medieval battlefield and into Selik’s life. The Tarnished Lady stays in the past with Lady Eadyth, a beekeeper and mother trying to protect her child and lands through a marriage bargain with Eirik of Ravenshire.
Hill likes proud men. She likes humbling them more.
The series continues with Tykir and Alinor in The Bewitched Viking, Rurik and Maire in The Blue Viking, and Tyra and Adam in My Fair Viking. Later books such as A Tale of Two Vikings, Viking in Love, The Viking Takes a Knight, The Norse King’s Daughter, Santa Viking, and The Pirate Bride broaden the cast with princesses, twins, knights, pirates, holiday chaos, and more family connections.
The tone is historical romance with a wink. Hill uses medieval settings, arranged marriages, kidnappings, feuds, healing, and royal politics, but she rarely lets the mood stay solemn for long. Characters argue, tease, misunderstand, and often make fools of themselves before they figure out what love is asking of them.
Read in publication order if you can. The books have standalone couples, but the relationships and family links build a fun sense of shared history.
