Unlocked Hearts is Anna J. McIntyre's lighter romance series, but lighter does not mean friction-free. These books are about people who have already been disappointed, embarrassed, widowed, controlled, or badly misread, and who have to decide whether they can risk trusting somebody again. The mood is warmer than the Coulson novels, yet the characters still have real baggage.

When Brandon Carpenter reappears on Shipley Mountain, their unfinished business becomes impossible to ignore, especially once danger enters the picture. That mix of emotional mess and practical stakes is a good sample of the whole series.

The later books each play with a different romance setup. After Sundown throws rich, rough-edged Cole Taylor against Kit Landon, a young widow who wants nothing to do with him after a terrible first impression. While Snowbound traps writer Ella with famous rocker Brady Gates at a remote cabin during a blizzard. Sugar Rush follows Lexi Beaumont as she runs from her controlling grandfather and lands in Lake Havasu City next door to a handsome man who is hiding his connection to her past.

So yes, the setups are very catnip for romance readers.

What keeps the books grounded is McIntyre's interest in the awkward middle, the part where attraction is easy but trust is not. She has described these novels as stories about falling in love, and that fits. The pleasure is not only in whether the couples end up together, but in watching them sort out pride, grief, fear, class differences, and the bad habits they bring into the room.

The settings do a lot of work as well. Bars, mountain cabins, small communities, and bright Arizona sunlight keep the series feeling tangible. McIntyre likes to put characters in close quarters, then let conversation, misunderstanding, and outside pressure do the rest. If you want romance with second chances, forced proximity, meddling pasts, and hard-won happy endings, Unlocked Hearts is the easiest place to start. The books are linked, but each one can also be enjoyed on its own.
