An Imperfect Future

by David Penny

2021

In 1944, Lancaster bombardier Calum Auger can see a few seconds ahead, a talent that has kept him alive over Germany. Recruited into secret Unit-13, he joins other psychics to track stolen atomic secrets before the Nazis can turn them into a superweapon.

Series background & context

The Unit-Thirteen series asks what might have happened if the Second World War had included a secret squad built around people with genuine psychic gifts. It centres on Calum Auger, a young Lancaster bomber crewman in 1944 who can see a few seconds into the future and has survived combat by trusting that strange glimpse of what is coming.

When his luck finally runs out and his aircraft crash lands back in England, Calum expects to be heading for hospital or a desk job. Instead he finds two government agents waiting to recruit him into Unit-13, a hush hush team of British operatives whose unusual abilities are treated as just another weapon in the fight against Nazi Germany.

In An Imperfect Future Calum is thrown together with other gifted strangers and asked to track down spies who have stolen designs for an atomic bomb. The chase takes them from airfields and safe houses to interrogation rooms and covert journeys across a country still under blackout. Their visions and instincts are useful, but never perfect, which keeps the outcome uncertain and the danger very human.

Alongside the action, the books explore what it means to live with a talent that isolates you. Calum has to decide how far he is willing to let the military use his gift, and whether saving lives in the present justifies the toll on his own mind and on the friends who trust him. Loyalty inside the unit matters as much as the mission itself.

Readers who enjoy wartime spy stories with a twist will find familiar elements here, from coded messages and double agents to tense briefings in smoky rooms. The added layer of paranormal ability raises the stakes rather than replacing the need for old fashioned courage, and keeps Unit-13 balancing on the edge between believable history and something stranger.
