Promises and Pixie Dust

by Robin D Mahle

2021

Thumb sized Lina leaves the only home she has ever known to seek a hidden kingdom where people are her size. Bound to protect her by a desperate bargain, farm boy Edrich joins her through the deadly Enchanted Forest, where bitter history and slow kindling feelings collide.

Series background & context

Unfabled is a shared world project built around the Enchanted Forest, a place where happily ever after is common, but getting there still hurts. Robin D Mahle and Elle Madison's entry, Promises and Pixie Dust, takes the Thumbelina legend and shrinks it down even further, following a heroine who really is no bigger than a thumb.

Lina has always lived in a world that was not built for her. Every table, every doorway, every tool has to be adapted, and most people look right past her. When her mother dies, the small, makeshift life they carved out together collapses, leaving Lina with a choice, spend the rest of her days alone in a place that will never quite fit, or gamble everything on the old stories about a hidden kingdom of fae her own size.

That gamble sends her into the Enchanted Forest, a place that mixes whimsy with real danger. The trees are huge, the unicorns are not nearly as innocent as the tales suggest, and every patch of pixie dust comes with a warning label. Lina is stubborn, clever, and more than a little reckless, determined to prove she deserves more than being someone's curiosity.

Edrich, the human farm boy who once cared for her, has his own reasons for following. A desperate bargain made to save his father's life now binds him to Lina's safety, even if she would rather he stayed away. Their journey forces them to confront old hurts, buried feelings, and the gap in size and experience that has always stood between them.

The story keeps the warm heart of the original Thumbelina tale while twisting the details into something stranger and more grounded. There is plenty of banter and slow building romance, but also real stakes as Lina and Edrich face bandits, magical hangovers, and choices that could cost them everything they have left.

Although Promises and Pixie Dust can be read entirely on its own, it shares a world with other Unfabled retellings, each using the Enchanted Forest as a backdrop for a new couple and a new twist on a familiar story. If you like your fairy tales with a sense of humor, a little danger, and characters who feel like real people dropped into impossible situations, this is a good place to start.
