Undercover Books in Order

The Undercover series is one of Helena Newbury's clearest early experiments with serial storytelling. Unlike most of her later romantic suspense novels, which are built as full standalones, this story unfolds across multiple parts and is meant to keep pushing the same central deception until it breaks.

At the center is a desk-bound CIA language specialist who thinks she wants fieldwork and gets more than she bargained for. She is pulled out from behind the safety of transcripts and analysis and sent into a live operation aimed at Luka, a Russian arms dealer with mafia ties. The assignment sounds simple on paper. Get close. Be useful. Gain trust. In practice, it means living inside a lie while the attraction becomes real enough to threaten everything.

That is the hook.

The tone is tense from the start because the danger is built into the romance. This is not a story where the couple meet honestly and then face outside trouble together. The relationship begins as an operation, and that gives every scene an extra layer. Desire means risk. Intimacy means exposure. Even quieter moments carry suspense because the heroine is always one mistake away from discovery.

The original sequence begins with Seduced, continues through Conflicted and Betrayed, and was later gathered into the full-length novel Lying and Kissing. That matters if you are deciding where to start. If you like shorter, cliffhanger-driven installments, the serial structure is part of the appeal. Because the series is built around one undercover mission, it feels tighter and more focused than some of Newbury's broader shared-world books. The glamour and danger of the Russian mob are there, but the real pressure comes from proximity. The heroine is not watching a dangerous man from a safe distance anymore. She is beside him, translating desire into strategy and strategy back into desire, while never fully knowing whether either of them is still in control.

It also shows a lot of the ingredients Newbury would keep using later: morally complicated heroes, heroines who are smarter and braver than they first believe, and plots that mix romance with immediate physical danger. You can see the road from Undercover to later mafia books very clearly.

Just go in knowing that Undercover plays differently from her usual standalones.
