Series background & context

Ultimate X4 is a compact crossover from Marvel's Ultimate line, bringing together the Ultimate versions of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. That means younger, sharper-edged takes on familiar characters, plus a setting where science, mutation, and public fear all sit closer to the surface than in the main Marvel universe.

The fun here comes from collision.

Carey plays with the different energies of the two teams, brilliant young scientists on one side, volatile young mutants on the other, and lets the misunderstandings, rivalries, and bigger threats do the work. It is a superhero team-up story, but with that Ultimate-universe habit of turning the temperature up a little on both the personalities and the consequences.

If you want a brisk crossover with recognizable characters in an alternate continuity, this is an easy, fast-moving stop in Carey's Marvel work.
