The Twin Daggers duology is MarcyKate Connolly's young adult fantasy series about espionage, magic, machinery, and twin sisters caught in a long-running conflict. The series gets much of its tension from competing loyalties. Aissa loves her sister and wants justice for her people, but she also begins to question the stories she has been taught about the other side. Romance, family bonds, and political conflict all push her toward choices that cannot be undone.

In Heartless Heirs, Aissa, Zandria, and their allies are on the run. Zandria's captivity has changed her, the Magi are moving toward war, and Aissa's bond with the Technocrat prince Aro makes her suspect to nearly everyone. Clues about the Alchemist Alliance and the twins' unusual powers may offer a way to heal the divide, or give ambitious people another weapon.

These books move quickly, but the heart of the story is the relationship between the sisters and the question of whether they can remain close when they no longer want the same future.
