Series background & context
The Twin Daggers duology is MarcyKate Connolly's young adult fantasy series about espionage, magic, machinery, and twin sisters caught in a long-running conflict. Its world is divided between the Magi, magical people believed by many to be gone, and the Technocrats, whose power is rooted in invention and control. Neither side is as simple as its slogans suggest.
The first book, Twin Daggers, follows Aissa and her twin sister, Zandria. They are Magi spies living undercover among the Technocrats, pretending to be ordinary apprentices by day while planning revenge by night. Their mission is personal as well as political, because they want to take back the city from the people they see as enemies.
Aissa is assigned to find and kidnap the hidden heir to the Technocrat throne. The task grows more complicated when she meets a compassionate Technocrat researcher searching for a cure for the Heartless, people who survive with mechanical hearts. Then Zandria is captured, and Aissa must decide what matters most when every possible ally comes with a cost.
The series gets much of its tension from competing loyalties. Aissa loves her sister and wants justice for her people, but she also begins to question the stories she has been taught about the other side. Romance, family bonds, and political conflict all push her toward choices that cannot be undone.
Trust is the rarest kind of magic.
In Heartless Heirs, Aissa, Zandria, and their allies are on the run. Zandria's captivity has changed her, the Magi are moving toward war, and Aissa's bond with the Technocrat prince Aro makes her suspect to nearly everyone. Clues about the Alchemist Alliance and the twins' unusual powers may offer a way to heal the divide, or give ambitious people another weapon.
These books move quickly, but the heart of the story is the relationship between the sisters and the question of whether they can remain close when they no longer want the same future. Read Twin Daggers first, then Heartless Heirs. It is a good fit for readers who want fantasy adventure with secret missions, divided cities, forbidden feelings, and characters trying to build a better answer than revenge.
