Series background & context
Twilight follows Bella Swan as she moves to Forks, Washington, to live with her father. The small town's rain and unfamiliar school routine initially suggest a quiet life, but classmate Edward Cullen draws her attention. He and his family are vampires, and becoming close to him brings risks Bella could not have expected. Stephenie Meyer builds the series around their attraction while asking what it means to choose a relationship that could change the course of a human life.
The romance and its danger are inseparable.
Edward wants to protect Bella, including from his own instincts. The Cullens' effort to live differently from other vampires makes self-control a continuing concern, rather than a problem solved once the pair understand each other. Bella is curious and determined, and her feelings do not disappear when she learns why Edward keeps his distance. Their relationship brings the ordinary parts of her life, such as school and her father's expectations, into contact with a hidden world whose rules she is still discovering.
Forks and the surrounding landscape help give that hidden world room to exist. Forests, rain and a relatively small community provide an intimate setting in which an unfamiliar family can attract curiosity without revealing everything about itself. Bella's friendship with Jacob Black introduces another set of relationships and loyalties. As the books continue, he becomes central to her life and to the tensions between supernatural groups. The people around Bella have reasons of their own to worry about the choices she is making.
The main sequence develops through Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. The opening novel establishes Bella and Edward's connection. Later books widen the conflict around them, bringing loss, divided loyalties and threats from other vampires into the story. Bella's bond with Jacob becomes increasingly important, and decisions about a human future or an immortal one carry consequences for more than one couple. The continuing cast makes those questions personal: family and friendship are part of what each character stands to gain or put at risk.
Midnight Sun is a companion to the opening novel, told from Edward's perspective. It adds his thoughts, memories and experience of hearing the minds around him, giving familiar scenes another meaning. Read the four main novels in order for Bella's central story, then use the companion to revisit how the relationship began. The series combines paranormal romance with suspense and family conflict. Its appeal comes from staying close to the emotional stakes while letting the supernatural world grow around them. Bella is repeatedly asked what she wants, whom she trusts and how much change she is willing to accept for the life she imagines.
