Turncoat's Truth

by William D Arand

2023

Jeremiah hunts monsters from the shadows, doing the ugly work polite society refuses to admit is necessary. Years of staring into the abyss have changed him, and when the truths behind his war are finally revealed, he must decide whether he has become the very thing he fights.

Series background & context

Turncoat’s Truth is a darker, more introspective urban fantasy written with co author Victor E. Krabin. Jeremiah makes his living as a monster hunter, doing the ugly work that lets the rest of humanity pretend the creatures in the shadows do not exist. At his best he can be called vengeful; on bad days, even he might admit that he is closer to a monster than the things he kills.

The story takes place in a world where very few people are willing to fight for humanity first, and those who do it are rarely thanked. Jeremiah operates in the cracks between official structures, taking jobs that authorities will happily deny ever existed. Years of staring into the abyss carve deep grooves in his mind and soul, and the book is as much about that internal erosion as it is about external threats.

As the plot unfolds, Jeremiah is forced to confront the possibility that everything he thought he knew about the war he fights, the enemies he hates, and even the nature of the abyss itself might be wrong. The tone is closer to noir than superhero, with more quiet dread than flashy power displays. It is a good choice for readers who want Arand’s competence porn and world building wrapped in a more somber, horror tinged package.
