Series background & context

Tribulation Cult is Michael Phillips's speculative Christian series about the future of faith and political freedom in the United States. The story begins with the upheavals of the 1960s and follows several generations into an imagined future. Phillips combines a family-and-friendship saga with political suspense, using divergent careers to explore a widening conflict over the place of Christianity in public life. The narrative reflects his religious and political concerns through fictional events and institutions.

Four college friends provide the human starting point for a much larger national story.

In The Invisible War, two of those friends enter ministry while two pursue political lives that eventually carry them toward the highest levels of power. Their choices make the growing distance between opposing worldviews personal. Questions about loyalty, belief, and the church's role run through the long timeline. As the country changes around them, the books ask whether committed Christians could come to be treated as a dangerous group outside acceptable public life. That possibility gives the series its title and one of its central sources of tension.

Birth of a Remnant continues the friends' intertwined histories after a presidential assassination in the early 2030s. The narrative moves toward the election of 2048, with religious identity becoming increasingly contentious. The idea of a remnant concerns believers trying to preserve their faith under pressure. Across this section of the story, political developments are also tests of how people understand the church and its obligations. The suspense comes partly from public events and partly from the decisions those events demand of individuals whose earlier connections have survived very different paths.

Later books expand the imagined political struggle. Hidden Jihad depicts President Jefferson Rhodes's administration near the middle of the century, alongside secretive movements seeking influence and a Christian community beginning to stir. Freedom Manifesto moves into 2051, when an anticipated electoral challenge and a proposed program of national transformation raise further threats for believers. These are developments within Phillips's fictional future. The series treats political power, concealed agendas, and religious renewal as connected forces competing to shape the country, with the survival of an independent church becoming an increasingly urgent concern.

Begin with The Invisible War, followed by Birth of a Remnant, Hidden Jihad, and Freedom Manifesto. Reading in sequence preserves the generational links and the accumulation of political consequences. The tone is serious Christian suspense, with spiritual warfare and questions about obedience woven into a broad account of social change. Readers should expect an explicitly Christian perspective and a sustained ideological conflict, as well as a story interested in how people respond when familiar institutions no longer seem dependable. Its long timespan connects the characters' earlier commitments to the future their descendants must inhabit.
