Series background & context

Craig Parshall's Trevor Black novels combine crime suspense with Christian supernatural fiction. Their central character is a lawyer who gains the disturbing ability to perceive spiritual forces that remain invisible to other people. A familiar world of clients, professional success and criminal investigation becomes inseparable from a conflict he cannot explain through ordinary evidence alone. Trevor's past gives the new danger a personal connection, while his unusual sight makes ignoring it impossible.

The Occupied introduces him as a successful criminal defense attorney in New York. His affluent adult life appears far removed from the forces he encountered as a young person, but the apparent distance does not last. Acquiring the ability to see the invisible reveals threats directed toward him. The gift is burdensome rather than reassuring: knowing something is present does not mean he understands how to defend himself against it or persuade anyone else that it exists.

Then a hometown friend's murder gives the danger a recognizable human cost.

The killing resembles other deaths that have crossed Trevor's path, drawing him back toward the place he came from. Returning home means confronting personal history as well as looking for a murderer. The novel links an investigation into physical crimes with Trevor's growing awareness of a spiritual struggle. His legal experience has taught him to pursue explanations, but the things he now sees require him to reconsider what kind of explanation the events demand. The story treats spiritual conflict as an active force within the suspense plot.

The Empowered takes Trevor toward New Orleans after a mysterious death in Washington appears to have connections there. An invitation to a legal convention provides a reason to visit the city, but the investigation becomes more dangerous than a professional trip. A murder in his hotel room puts suspicion on him, and his daughter's disappearance makes the threat immediate and intimate. The wider case involves vulnerable children and forces whose reach goes beyond what a routine criminal investigation can address. His responsibility as a father becomes part of the same struggle as his pursuit of the truth.

These are dark supernatural thrillers written from a Christian viewpoint, with criminal danger and spiritual evil operating together. Trevor's special perception connects the books, while the different settings place him in new circumstances where that ability brings obligations as well as risk. Start with The Occupied, then continue with The Empowered. The first novel establishes his history and the unsettling change in how he experiences the world; the second builds on that foundation as his investigation and family life become still more closely entangled.
