Series background & context
The Tremaine books take Tre out of the center of the Side Chic relationship chaos and ask what happens after a man decides he is tired of the life he built. By the time this series begins, Tre has already dragged a lot of pain behind him. Boykins, Virginia is full of reminders, broken trust, and people who have every reason not to believe he can change. So he leaves.
That move is the starting point of the series. Tre heads to Jordan City hoping distance will help him become a better man and finally get away from the constant mess back home. But the books are clear about one thing right away: relocation is not the same thing as transformation. Tre may want peace, but peace is hard to find when you have not actually finished paying for your past.
Kisha is a huge part of that pressure. She has been left behind, and she is not interested in making Tre's transition easy. Their history, their children, and the damage between them mean he cannot simply start over like the old life never happened. That gives the series a different feel from Side Chic. The relationship drama is still there, but the focus shifts more toward Tre's mindset, his guilt, and the question of whether he has the emotional maturity to become something better than what he has been.
The second book raises the stakes even more. Tre is hit with fresh family crisis, loss, and the sense that everything stable in his life keeps slipping away. Instead of a clean redemption arc, the series gives him more weight to carry and asks how much a person can endure before he breaks. That is really the core of these books. They are less about whether Tre wants change and more about whether he can survive the consequences long enough to earn it.
This is Tre's story, and West does not let him off easy.
If you already know him from Side Chic, this series feels like a direct extension of that fallout. If you do not, you can still read it as a male-centered urban drama about fatherhood, regret, and the long shadow of bad choices. The setting matters, the co-parenting tension matters, and the emotional mess matters most of all.
Expect a series that stays interested in pressure. Pressure from the past. Pressure from family. Pressure from grief, responsibility, and the version of yourself you are trying to outgrow. Tre wants a fresh start, but the books keep returning to the harder question: what if a fresh start still has to be built with damaged material?
