Series background & context
The Trasker series follows Brad Trasker, a veteran of three decades in counterintelligence who is supposed to be retired. Grieving a personal loss and deeply skeptical about the people who run the world, he takes a job in private security. Trouble keeps finding him anyway. These books blend modern technology and corporate intrigue with the feel of a classic spy novel.
In Night Owl, Brad attends the launch of Sparrow, a hydrogen powered experimental aircraft created by reclusive entrepreneur Kylie Connor. When the plane explodes on the runway and Kylie walks out of the fire almost unharmed, Brad is pulled back into the game. Evidence disappears, a key engineer vanishes, and a seed investor dies in what looks like a carefully arranged car accident. As Brad digs into the sabotage, he finds hints of Russian involvement, a stolen Cold War design, and a network of killers who do not mind adding one more name to their list.
Death Stake picks up with Brad now serving as head of security for Wind Aerospace. A furious Pentagon colonel calls to complain about a damaging cyber breach traced back to the company. The supposed culprit is a nervous young fast food worker who has somehow compromised classified systems. Brad decides to handle the matter quietly, but the situation spirals when the young man dies in what is reported as a suicide. Following the money and code draws Brad into a strange patchwork intelligence operation and an international criminal ring with tentacles reaching from American suburbs to Guam, Costa Rica, and Thailand.
Brad is older than most thriller heroes, and the books make good use of that. He relies on experience, contacts, and an ability to read a room rather than youthful bravado, and he often feels slightly out of step with the tech he is forced to confront. The Trasker novels also feed directly into the Specialists series, where Brad works alongside Jessica Blackwood, Theo Cray, and Sloan McPherson on threats too big for any one of them to handle.
