Transformation (Ann Gimpel) Books in Order

Transformation is an earlier Ann Gimpel series built around Lara McInnis, a psychotherapist whose paranormal gifts stop being a private oddity once the wider world begins to come apart. If you have read some of Gimpel's later dark fantasy, you will recognize the interest in dreams, symbols, and collapsing systems.

Lara is born with the sight. She can read auras and sense more than most people would ever want to know. In Psyche's Prophecy, that gift becomes impossible to ignore when patients begin sharing the same cataclysmic dream and a dangerous patient pushes her life toward violence. The help she seeks brings her into contact with Sidhe power and a magical world she can no longer keep at arm's length.

The later books, Psyche's Search and Psyche's Promise, keep widening the lens. Food shortages, blackouts, demons, goblins, and the Dreaming all become part of Lara's reality. Trevor is central to the emotional story, but the trilogy is just as interested in what magic reveals under pressure, and in who people become when the world they counted on starts to disintegrate.

This is urban fantasy with an apocalyptic edge rather than a purely personal paranormal story. The magic is tied to survival, and survival is tied to whether Lara can grow into powers she did not train for.

If you like character-driven fantasy that begins with subtle unease and grows into a full magical crisis, Transformation is a strong early example of what Gimpel does well. It blends psychology, prophecy, and social breakdown into a steadily darker ride.
