Trail of the Gunfighter Books in Order

Trail of the Gunfighter is Ralph Compton's three-book Nathan Stone saga. It is tighter than the later Gunfighter line and should be read in order. The trilogy begins with The Dawn of Fury, continues with The Killing Season, and ends with Autumn of the Gun.

Nathan Stone starts as a Civil War veteran returning home to Virginia. The war has already shown him enough horror, but home brings worse. His family has been murdered, and the men responsible have gone west. Nathan takes an oath of blood for blood, and that oath becomes the road that remakes him.

This is a revenge story first.

In The Dawn of Fury, Nathan follows the seven renegades who destroyed his family. He is half-starved, driven, and learning the laws of a country where a man with a Colt can become judge and executioner if he is fast enough to live. The book turns his grief into the beginning of a legend.

The Killing Season moves him deeper into the 1870s West. By then, famous names and violent reputations crowd the frontier: Jesse and Frank James, Doc Holliday, Wild Bill Hickok, Billy the Kid, Custer, and others. Nathan has become a figure of fear himself. The question is no longer only whether he can finish his vengeance, but whether a man shaped by killing can ever stop.

Autumn of the Gun brings the legend into its later season. Nathan is a lawman, outlaw, gambler, and wanderer, known across rough towns and dangerous trails. The past has not finished with him. The discovery of a son he barely knows forces him toward a final reckoning that is both personal and deadly.

The trilogy works because Nathan Stone is not treated as a happy hero. He becomes great with a gun because the world gives him little else to hold onto. His skill saves him, but it also cuts him away from ordinary life.

The setting is broad, moving through lawless trails, frontier towns, gambling rooms, and places where history and legend overlap. The tone is harsher and more mythic than the cattle-drive books, but still direct and easy to follow.

Start with The Dawn of Fury. Do not skip ahead. The power of the series comes from watching Nathan Stone become The Gunfighter one violent mile at a time.
