Tracy Weber Books in Order

Tracy Weber grew up on a dairy farm in Montana, surrounded by dogs, cats, cows, and whatever else happened to be underfoot that day. She left for Seattle at eighteen to attend the University of Washington, but the mix of animals, practical work, and big Montana roots never really left her. You can feel that later in her fiction, which treats pets as family and ordinary people as worth noticing.

She did not start out planning to be a novelist.

Weber's early career took a few sharp turns, and that may be one reason her books feel so grounded. She earned a degree in chemical engineering and worked as a research engineer before deciding she liked being around people better than machines. She went back to the University of Washington, earned an MBA in 1993, worked as an organizational consultant, and later became a group manager at Microsoft.

In 2000, she made the kind of career move that probably sounded surprising to everyone around her. She left Microsoft to teach yoga, trained as a certified yoga therapist, and opened Whole Life Yoga in Seattle in 2001. She has also led teacher training and worked as a yoga therapist, which helps explain why the yoga in her novels feels like part of daily life instead of set dressing.

Writing came later.

Weber has said she loved mysteries from the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys days, but she did not seriously think about writing one until Kate Davidson and Bella appeared in her head and refused to leave. That spark turned into the Downward Dog Mysteries, a series that mixes yoga, dogs, murder, and a very Seattle kind of community life. Bella, the German shepherd at the center of the books, was inspired by Weber's own special-needs dog, Tasha.

Most readers meet her through Murder Strikes a Pose, where yoga teacher Kate Davidson investigates the death of a homeless friend and ends up responsible for his huge dog. The book won the Maxwell Award for fiction and was nominated for the Agatha Award for Best First Novel. Weber kept building the series through A Killer Retreat, Karma's a Killer, A Fatal Twist, Pre-Meditated Murder, and Murder Likes It Hot. Readers usually come for the cozy mystery setup, then stay for the rescue animals, the dry humor, and the way Kate's personal life actually changes from one book to the next.

That continuing life is a big part of Weber's appeal. Her stories care about yoga, but they also care about homelessness, animal welfare, family rupture, fertility struggles, and the awkward ways decent people try to help one another. Kate is prickly, loyal, and not especially serene for someone who teaches yoga, which is exactly the point. Weber seems most interested in what compassion looks like when it has to survive stress, grief, money problems, and bad decisions.

These are cozy mysteries with a little grit under the mat.

Weber still lives in Seattle with her husband, Marc, and has written about life with their German shepherd, Ana. When she is not writing, she teaches yoga, walks the dog, and, by her own telling, enjoys Blackthorn cider at a favorite local ale house. That picture, yoga teacher, dog person, mystery writer, is probably the clearest way to understand her work. She writes about the things she clearly knows and loves, and that gives the books their warmth.
