Author bio
Tracy L Higley has been trying to time travel through stories since she was eight years old. She remembers the exact moment the dream started, in the backseat of her parents' car at a gas station on the way to New York City, when she wrote the first sentence of her first novel. She still has those early notebooks, complete with a family tree, a timeline, and all the signs of a child who was already thinking like a novelist.
The dream stayed.
She kept writing through childhood, making up stories, drafting plays for neighborhood friends, and even starting an elementary school newspaper. By college, though, her plan looked more practical. She studied English Literature and Secondary Education and expected to spend her life teaching other people's stories rather than writing her own.
Then the writing dream pushed back in. As a newly married woman, she and her husband bought their first computer largely so she could finish a novel, print it out, and send it to publishers. What happened next might have ended the whole thing. One publisher sent back a standard rejection because it was not accepting unsolicited work. A writer she admired agreed to read the manuscript, then returned it with a response so harsh that Higley stopped trying for ten years.
That wasn't the end.
During those years away from fiction publishing, she kept learning her craft by writing drama productions for her church. When she finally returned to novels, she did it with a stronger sense of story and a clearer sense of what kind of books she wanted to write. Since then, she has published nearly twenty novels, along with nonfiction, and her work has been recognized by the Christy, Carol, and ECPA Book of the Year awards. She also won the Faith, Hope, and Love Reader's Choice Award.
Most of her fiction heads straight for the ancient world. Books like Isle of Shadows, Pyramid of Secrets, and The Queen's Handmaid drop readers into places like Rhodes, Egypt, and Jerusalem, where politics, danger, faith, and longing all collide. Later, she opened the door even wider with A Time to Seek, which mixes 1920s archaeology with time travel, and with Nightfall in the Garden of Deep Time, a more contemporary and imaginative story about creativity, mystery, and hidden identity.
Settings matter a lot in her work. Higley earned a Master's Degree in Ancient History and has traveled through Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Italy, and Turkey while researching her novels. That shows up on the page. Her books tend to care about the feel of a harbor, the heat of a desert road, the machinery of empire, and the way ordinary people keep moving inside very large historical events.
Her stories are often full of suspense, but they are also interested in spiritual pressure points. Readers who return to her work usually do it for that combination, strong settings, layered characters, romantic tension, and big questions about calling, courage, identity, and belief.
Outside of writing, her life has been busy in other ways too. She has raised four children, built a shipping and logistics company, and kept traveling. These days she has said she loves landscaping around her three-plus acres of woodlands, reading by a crackling fire in cold weather or near her pond and waterfall when it's warm, and, of course, dreaming up the next trip and the next story.
