Series background & context
Tournament of Shadows moves into magical Georgian England and follows Seraphina Winyard, usually called Sera, a young woman with an impossible problem. She is the first female magic user to reach adulthood in centuries, which means she is feared, watched, and treated as something between a weapon and a scandal. From the beginning, the series is about power, control, and what it costs to claim a life of your own.
In Opening Gambit, Sera escapes captivity only to find herself accused of murder. That book gives the series its shape. She is learning what her magic can do, trying to stay alive, and discovering that every answer seems to open into a larger scheme. Hugh Miles, the surgeon who helps her early on, is one of the figures who anchors the story, but Sera is always the center. She has to grow fast, think on her feet, and learn which allies she can trust.
The chess titles are not just decorative. Every book is about positioning, pressure, and someone trying to force Sera into a corner. A Dangerous Ruse turns on a murdered woman and a missing enchanted bracelet. Shadow Schemes sends Sera to a countryside manor with a restless spirit and a noblewoman facing the gallows. Feint and Doublecross brings in a beast stalking Southbank and long-buried secrets from Sera's past. By the time the series reaches Castle Manoeuvre and Mage's End Game, the threat has widened to imprisonment, rebellion, King George, and the future of the country itself.
That bigger arc is what makes the series feel more like one long story than a stack of standalones. The Mage Council never stops trying to control Sera. Lord Rowan looms larger as the books go on. Old conspiracies keep surfacing. Even the smaller mysteries matter because they are often tied to a much nastier plan underneath.
Sera is never allowed a quiet week.
The tone sits somewhere between gaslamp fantasy, mystery, and coming-of-age adventure, with a little romance and a lot of friendship. Wallace likes a loyal supporting cast, and this series really benefits from one. Sera may be the piece everyone is fighting over, but she is not alone on the board for long.
If you want the full effect, start with Opening Gambit and read straight through. The cases are enjoyable on their own, but the real pleasure is watching Sera stop being a pawn in other people's plans and become a force they can no longer contain.
