Totally Dope West Hollywood Adventures of Busty Russell and Tope McWhite Books in Order

This wonderfully overlong title tells you almost everything you need to know. The Busty Russell and Tope McWhite books are broad, campy, and very aware of how silly they are allowed to be. If most Jaid Black series run on fated mates, warlords, or dangerous suspense, this one runs on comic timing, fish-out-of-water chaos, and two people who are nowhere near as prepared as they think they are.

Busty and Tope are the engine.

Busty Russell is a pampered West Hollywood socialite. Tope McWhite is her equally image-conscious gay best friend. Together they run a private detective agency that sounds glamorous and looks exclusive, but is mostly an excuse for trouble. In Sporked in Time, a dying benefactor hires them to solve the world-changing mystery of where the spork came from. That sentence is ridiculous, and the book knows it. Their investigation drops them straight into the Scottish Highlands in 1391, where modern vanity and medieval reality are a terrible fit.

The fun comes from contrast. West Hollywood polish meets mud, danger, and clan politics. A duo used to style, gossip, and performance has to navigate a world where none of their normal instincts are useful. Busty and Tope are not classic hard-boiled detectives, and that is exactly why the premise works. Their cluelessness is part of the joke, but so is the fact that they keep lurching forward anyway.

This is not a subtle comedy.

The tone is campy, loud, and intentionally extra. It leans into social satire, time-travel absurdity, and character humor more than deep emotional realism. That does not mean there is no romance or no story. It just means the series is selling a different pleasure than Black’s darker work. You are here for the clash between modern celebrity-adjacent nonsense and a historical setting that has no interest in indulging it.

Because this is a very small series, the page works less as a big navigation map and more as a quick orientation tool. It tells you what kind of comedy you are signing up for, where the one current entry fits, and why the title that sounds like a joke actually is a joke, just one with kilts, time travel, and a lot of attitude behind it.
