Series background & context
The Torch centers on Jim Hammond, the original android Human Torch, a character who always carries a slightly mournful weight because he belongs to Marvel history as much as to any one moment. Mike Carey's series uses that well. The premise begins with Hammond returning from the dead, but the real story is about identity, memory, and the trouble that follows a hero who should not be alive anymore.
The tone sits somewhere between superhero adventure and noir mystery.
Jim is powerful, but he is also out of step, which makes him a good guide through conspiracies, crimes, and old secrets. Carey does not treat the Torch as just a nostalgia piece. He uses the character's strange status, human-made, not fully human, buried in the past but still active in the present, to build a story about belonging and unfinished business.
If you like Marvel material with a quieter, more reflective center under the action, The Torch is a strong standalone read.
