Author bio
Tom Schreck was born in Albany, New York, and Albany has remained the home base for much of his life and work. He writes crime fiction with boxing gyms, counseling offices, dive bars, rescue dogs, and people who rarely fit neatly into the system.
His route to fiction came through jobs that gave him plenty to observe. Schreck studied at the University of Notre Dame and later earned a master's degree in psychology. He has worked as a drug clinic director, written freelance pieces on subjects ranging from boxing to pets and fitness, and served as a boxing official at the world-championship level.
That is a lot of material for a mystery writer to carry around.
In 2007, Schreck put those experiences to work in On the Ropes, the first Duffy Dombrowski mystery. Duffy is a social worker by day and a working boxer by night, with a bad habit of getting into trouble when someone vulnerable is being pushed around. His basset hound, Al, is just as important to the books, usually hungry, often stubborn, and regularly present when the situation turns serious.
The Duffy books mix crime stories with the pressures of social work, the rough routines of boxing, and a barroom sense of humor. In TKO, Duffy is assigned to keep tabs on a man newly released after a long prison sentence, then finds himself questioning the obvious suspect when former high-school stars start dying. Out Cold brings a troubled veteran and warnings of terrorism into Duffy's orbit. The Vegas Knockout sends him west for a boxing job that becomes tangled with violence on the Strip.
Duffy is not polished, and that is the point.
Schreck's stories tend to side with people who have been dismissed, ignored, or written off. Duffy can be angry, impulsive, and funny in equal measure, but he keeps trying to do right by his clients and friends. Boxing is more than background color in these books. It gives the action its physical weight and gives Duffy a place to work through his frustrations.
Schreck also wrote the standalone thriller Getting Dunn, centered on Iraq veteran TJ Dunn as she deals with trauma, grief, and a dangerous military-related conspiracy. TJ later enters Duffy's world in The Ten Count, which follows Duffy into a private high school shaken by a coach's murder. The overlap lets Schreck widen the cast without losing the scrappy, human scale of the earlier mysteries.
He has also written short Duffy stories, including the crossover novella Planter's Punch with J. A. Konrath, which brings Duffy together with Chicago detective Jack Daniels. Beyond prose fiction, Schreck has written plays featuring imagined conversations between Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali, two figures whose public lives and private pressures clearly interest him.
The common thread is simple. Schreck writes about flawed people who keep showing up when it matters.
