Author bio

Tom Abrahams writes the kind of stories that start with a bad day and keep getting worse in a very readable way. His novels move through political intrigue, post-apocalyptic survival, science fiction, and noir, but they all share the same instinct: put believable people under pressure and see what they do next.

He came to fiction through deadlines.

Long before he was publishing novels, Abrahams was a serious reader. As a kid he tore through the Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, westerns, mysteries, and science fiction. In high school, an English teacher wrote a simple note on one of his essays, that he must read a lot. He has said that was the moment he understood the connection between reading and writing.

He spent years writing short stories and then built a long career in television news. That work took him to the White House and Capitol Hill, and it also put him at the Pentagon just hours after 9/11. He has interviewed presidents and covered politics at close range, which helps explain why even his wildest plots usually feel rooted in systems, institutions, and the way power really moves.

The first novel did not arrive in a burst of genius. By his own account, he wrote an early police procedural that was not very good, learned from it, and kept going. Later, with encouragement from his wife, he found the idea that became Sedition, a modern conspiracy thriller sparked by an old historical plot, and that book opened the door to everything that followed.

That background still shows.

Readers who pick up Home usually meet the side of Abrahams that loves survival fiction, tight pacing, and hard choices in a broken world. SpaceMan pushes that same tension into orbit, following an astronaut trying to get back to his family after a solar catastrophe knocks Earth into chaos. In Allegiance, he leans into the technothriller side of his work, with an ordinary man dragged into politics, secret research, and a much bigger conspiracy than he expected. And in Prepper, he narrows the lens again, asking what happens when the grid fails and an everyday family has to decide how prepared they really are.

He also likes stories where setting matters. Texas turns up a lot, especially in the Traveler books and several of his thrillers. So do broken systems, improvised communities, weary but capable protagonists, and people who discover that survival is one problem while rebuilding is another. Even when the premise is large, an EMP attack, a plague, a solar event, the tension usually comes down to family, trust, duty, and whether someone can stay decent when the rules collapse.

There is a working reporter's eye in these books. Scenes tend to be clean, direct, and built around motion. Even when he veers into science fiction or alternate versions of catastrophe, the people at the center are often teachers, parents, journalists, soldiers, or strivers who have to learn fast because nobody is coming to rescue them.

Today, Abrahams is still writing while living in Southeast Texas with his wife and two children. He has written more than forty novels, and the trilogy built from SpaceMan, Descent, and Retrograde has been optioned for television and film. That mix of day-job realism and big-idea storytelling is a big part of his appeal.
