Series background & context

The Time Traders books mix time travel, archaeology, and first-contact adventure in a way that feels both pulpy and smart. The core idea is simple enough: agents travel into the past to investigate threats and recover missing people or knowledge. The actual missions are rarely simple.

What makes this series stand out is that history is not just a backdrop. Ancient sites, vanished civilizations, and fragments that do not belong in the right era all matter. The books ask what happens when the past pushes back, and what happens when alien interests are tangled up with human history.

Sherwood Smith's entries sit comfortably inside that setup. Her Time Traders novels follow Ross Murdock, Eveleen Riordan, and their allies into dangerous assignments where the mystery is bigger than it first appears. A vanished team, an alien world, the legend of Atlantis, these are stories that begin with a puzzle and then widen into something much riskier.

The tone is adventurous, but there is also a real sense of wonder. Strange languages, odd customs, buried clues, and the problem of making sense of a civilization before time runs out are part of the pleasure. If you like science fiction where exploration and investigation matter as much as action, this series has a lot to offer.
