Series background & context
At the center of the Time Hunters books are Becky and Joe Mellor, two siblings who think they are heading for a boring stay with their eccentric Uncle Percy. Instead they arrive at Bowen Hall, a stately home that seems to have swallowed half of history. Dinosaurs wander the grounds. Mythic figures turn up in the corridors. And Percy is not just odd, he is part of a secret world of time travel, ancient relics, and enemies who are willing to tear history apart to get what they want.
That setup gives the series its basic engine. In each book, Becky, Joe, Percy, and their ally Will Scarlet are pulled into a hunt for an artifact with deep roots in myth or legend. The Golden Fleece, Pandora's Box, the Spear of Fate, and other famous objects are not just old stories here. They are dangerous prizes in a much larger game, and getting to them first usually means racing through several time periods, facing creatures that should not exist, and thinking fast when brute force will not do the job.
Bowen Hall is the anchor.
Even when the books jump to Ancient Egypt, the Caribbean, Jacobean England, or some other corner of history, the heart of the series stays with the same small team. Becky is often the sharpest observer, quick to question the madness around her even as she gets dragged deeper into it. Joe brings curiosity and nerve. Uncle Percy is brilliant, chaotic, and just unreliable enough to keep everyone on edge. Will Scarlet adds swagger, humour, and a nice reminder that Ashmore's version of history is never limited to textbook facts.
As the series goes on, the adventures link together more closely. A major threat comes from Emerson Drake, a ruthless rival whose search for the Eden Relics turns each quest into a race against real catastrophe. Later books add new mysteries, darker traps, and enemies like the Wraith, who prefers mind games and historical death traps to a straight fight. The stakes rise, but the books never lose sight of the fun of the chase.
That balance is a big part of why the series works. These are fast, imaginative middle grade adventures, but they also like to play with myth, folklore, and the what-if side of history. One chapter might give you pirates or gangsters, the next a dodo, a sabre-tooth tiger, or a trip into a place that feels half legend and half nightmare. Ashmore keeps the plotting brisk and the tone lively, so even the bigger bits of lore tend to arrive in the middle of action.
If you like quest stories with sibling teamwork, secret histories, and a strong sense of momentum, Time Hunters is easy to fall into.
