Author bio
Tif Marcelo was born in the Philippines and raised in San Francisco, and that mix of movement, memory, and community still shows up all through her books. She has written about finding early comfort in libraries, and you can feel that lifelong reader energy in the way her stories balance romance, family mess, and real-life work.
Books were home early on.
As a kid, Marcelo was already reaching for big, grown-up novels, and by her teens she had found writers who made her think seriously about leaving her own words on the shelf someday. But her path to publishing was not a straight line. At seventeen she enlisted in the military, later earned a BS in Nursing and a master's in public administration, and went on to serve as an Army nurse.
The writing never really stopped.
Through military life, constant motion, work, marriage, and raising four children, she kept journals, talked stories out in her head, and blogged for years. She has said the real turning point came when she realized she had the stamina to finish a novel. That sent her back to a promise she had made to herself as a girl, that one day she would put her own stories into those library stacks.
Her debut, North to You, arrived in 2017 and laid out a lot of what readers still come to her for: food, second chances, Filipino American family life, and characters trying to make love fit around duty and work. The rest of the Journey to the Heart books, East in Paradise and West Coast Love, kept that same warm, busy-life feeling, with entrepreneurs, food media, road trips, and people whose careers matter just as much as their relationships.
That interest in family stays central across her work. The Key to Happily Ever After follows three sisters trying to keep a wedding business going. It Takes Heart drops readers into a family-run resort in the Outer Banks, where romance and sibling strain are impossible to separate. In In a Book Club Far Away, she turns to Army wives and broken friendships, showing how much history can live inside one old hurt.
She also shifts tone well without losing her center. The Holiday Switch brings a lighter, younger holiday romance energy, while When Jasmine Blooms leans more into grief, motherhood, and the haunting pull of the life you did not choose. Even when the setup changes, the through line is pretty clear: Marcelo likes stories about connection, repair, and people learning how to come back to each other.
She now writes for both adult and young adult readers, hosts The Stories to Love Podcast, and has said she is inspired daily by her military hero husband and their four children. A lot of her work circles the same big ideas, the strength of families, the endurance of friendship, heartfelt romance, but the details keep it grounded: food on the table, jobs that wear people out, military communities, weddings, road trips, and quiet moments of starting over. That mix is a big part of what makes her books feel easy to step into and easy to remember.
