In The Honorable Traitors, a bombing in Washington pulls Laker and Ava into a search that links present-day terror with buried secrets from the past. In The Havana Game, the action widens, with a Baltic crisis, a bombing, Russian pressure, Miami connections, and a Cuban American power broker whose influence reaches further than it should. These books like official structures, but they are even more interested in what happens once those structures start failing.

The tone is faster and more openly geopolitical than most of Lutz's series, yet his usual strengths still show. He is good at pressure, at broken trust, and at the moment when a character realizes the problem is larger than it first looked. That all carries over nicely into espionage fiction.

If you know Lutz mostly through his detectives, Thomas Laker is a good reminder that he could shift gears without losing control. The books read quickly, the stakes are bigger, and the partnership between Laker and Ava gives the series enough emotional weight to keep it from becoming only about operations and secrets.
