Author bio
Therese Beharrie grew up in Kuils River, on the northern side of Cape Town, and books were an early refuge. She has spoken about reading as a way to feel less alone when school was hard, and about inventing her own characters long before she ever thought of publishing.
That private habit turned into a real plan in her final year at university.
Beharrie studied at Stellenbosch University, completing a BA in language and culture and an honours degree in general linguistics in 2014. As the working world loomed, she decided she did not want writing to stay a someday dream. She entered Harlequin's So You Think You Can Write contest, and that decision changed everything.
Her first entry reached the top 25 and brought detailed editorial feedback. She entered again the next year, and though that second attempt did not go the way she hoped, editor Flo Nicoll asked to see her full manuscript. Months of calls, emails, and revisions followed. On May 6, 2015, the day before her birthday, Beharrie got the news that the book would be published as The Tycoon's Reluctant Cinderella.
That debut set the tone for a lot of what came after. In books like The Tycoon's Reluctant Cinderella, A Marriage Worth Saving, and The Millionaire's Redemption, she writes contemporary romance that stays close to emotion, old hurt, guarded hearts, and the slow work of learning to trust someone again. South African settings matter too. She has said she wanted to put Cape Town and the places she knows onto the page because readers do not always get to see that world in mass-market romance.
South Africa stays at the center of her work.
As her career grew, so did her range. The royal stories that begin with United by Their Royal Baby, the Roux family trilogy that opens with A Wedding One Christmas, and later novels such as And They Lived Happily Ever After and A Ghost in Shining Armor show how easily she moves between grounded category romance, light magical premises, and full paranormal comedy. The genre changes, but the emotional focus does not.
Her characters often want ordinary things, safety, family, forgiveness, one honest chance, even when the setup involves princes, billionaires, ghosts, or dream magic. Readers who like Beharrie's books usually mention the same ingredients, warmth, banter, vulnerability, and people who feel messy in believable ways. On her site, she describes her stories as having banter and heart, which is a neat summary of what she does.
She has also written openly about wanting to create books she wished existed, stories featuring people who look like her and settings that feel true to her life. That purpose runs through her bibliography. Whether she is writing about a Cape Town wedding, a fictional royal alliance, or a small coastal town, she keeps coming back to love stories that make room for Black characters, South African places, and the emotional aftershocks of family history.
Now based in Cape Town, Beharrie lives with her husband and two young sons. She has published with Harlequin, Carina Press, and Kensington, and her catalog keeps widening, from category romance to paranormal romance to small-town contemporary books like Single Dads Club. The through line is easy to spot: intimate love stories, clear feeling, and characters trying to build a life that finally fits.
