Author bio

Thea Harrison writes romances with teeth. Her books move easily between paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and contemporary love stories, but they tend to share a few things: strong-willed leads, dangerous situations, and relationships that have to earn their happy endings.

She wrote her first book, a romance, when she was nineteen. Before many readers knew her for dragons, witches, and fae courts, she published sixteen contemporary romances under the name Amanda Carpenter. Those earlier books were written for Harlequin Mills & Boon, and they gave her a long runway in writing emotional conflict, sharp chemistry, and fast-moving plots.

Then she took a break.

Harrison has said she stepped away from fiction for a time to collect a couple of graduate degrees and raise her child. When she came back, she did not return small. She returned with bigger worlds, stranger magic, and more room for large personalities to collide.

That new phase brought Dragon Bound, the book that introduced Pia Giovanni and Dragos Cuelebre and opened the door to the Elder Races universe. It is still one of the clearest entry points into her work. From there, the series widens into a modern world where Wyr, Light and Dark Fae, Nightkind, Demonkind, elves, and humans all live alongside each other, sometimes peacefully, often not.

Readers who stay with Harrison usually do so because she balances romance with momentum. Storm's Heart, Oracle's Moon, Kinked, and Night's Honor each shift attention to different couples, but the larger political world keeps moving in the background. There are alliances to manage, old grudges that never really die, and a steady sense that power always comes with a cost.

She likes a big world.

You can see that in the Moonshadow trilogy too, which leans further into fae politics, cursed loyalties, and Arthurian-flavored fantasy. Moonshadow, Spellbinder, and Lionheart keep the emotional pull of romance, but they also feel more like a continuing war story, with exiled courts, magical prisons, and old enemies who refuse to stay buried.

Harrison also writes beyond the Elder Races setting. The two Game of Shadows novels, Rising Darkness and Falling Light, are darker and more urban fantasy in shape, built around reincarnation, memory, and an end-of-the-world conflict. And on the contemporary side, the rereleased Amanda Carpenter novels, including A Deeper Dimension, Flashback, and The Gift of Happiness, show where a lot of her interest in emotional standoffs and hard-won trust first took shape.

Again and again, her stories come back to similar questions. What happens when somebody powerful falls in love? What happens when a guarded person is finally seen clearly? And what does trust look like when the stakes are not just personal, but magical, political, or life and death?

On her author page, Harrison says she lives with two small dogs that have very large personalities. She has also shared that she taught herself to read when she was very young, which feels like a fitting detail for a writer whose books are so full of people chasing knowledge, secrets, and the truth about themselves.

That thread runs through almost everything she writes. Whether the story centers on a dragon lord, a newly awakened witch, an exhausted ER worker, or two old friends finally noticing what has always been there, Harrison tends to write about capable adults under pressure, and about love arriving at exactly the wrong time, then proving impossible to ignore.
