Series background & context

The Women of Harbor House is Katie Winters' Nantucket series about family legacy and women trying to rebuild their lives. Harbor House begins as a cherished Vanberg family home, but Stella Vanberg's final wishes give it a new purpose. She wants the property to become a refuge for women facing crisis. Her children must reckon with that decision while grieving their mother and questioning how well they understood the life she lived before them.

In Harbor House, Candice Vanberg receives news of Stella's death just as her own marriage is collapsing. Her novelist husband's affair has left her uncertain about her future. She returns to the island with siblings Lindsey and Henry, expecting the family house to offer a place to mourn. Instead, their mother's will creates another source of upheaval. The siblings struggle to understand why a home they love is to serve strangers in need.

Stella has left more than a property.

Questions about her earlier life draw Candice into records, journals and memories. Hints of a forgotten songwriting career suggest a version of Stella her children never knew. The house becomes a link between that hidden history and the family's present difficulties. Its proposed role as a sanctuary raises an emotional question as well as a practical one: what does it mean to honor someone's wishes when those wishes unsettle your own idea of home?

The Quiet Rebuild continues the refuge's story through women facing different kinds of loss. Taylor Charron, a former child star whose adult acting career and marriage have unraveled, arrives at Harbor House carrying the weight of public attention and private grief. Lindsey's work to make the house a place of shelter brings their lives together. Helping someone else doesn't remove Lindsey's own pain, and the friendship opens space for both women to confront what they have been avoiding.

The Nantucket setting gives the series a shared place where these individual stories can meet. Harbor House offers distance from familiar routines and expectations, yet it doesn't promise that a change of scenery can erase the past. Family members and guests carry their histories with them. The drama comes from what they are willing to reveal, what they can learn from one another and how an inherited place can gain meaning through people who need it now.

Begin with Harbor House, followed by The Quiet Rebuild and Still We Rise. The opening book establishes Stella's wishes and the family tensions surrounding the refuge, making it the clearest introduction to the continuing setting. These are women's-fiction stories about mothers and daughters, grief, friendship and second chances. The connecting hope is that a home associated with one family's memories can become a starting point for other women without losing the history that made it matter.
