Series background & context
The Vesper Coven follows Wren Vesper, a sixteen-year-old who discovers that her family has been hiding a magical inheritance. She begins Daughters of Sea and Storm worrying about school and her future, rather than spells. News of her grandmother's death takes Wren and her mother to Sedgwick Cove, Maine, where those ordinary concerns give way to questions about who she is and what her relatives have kept from her.
In Sedgwick Cove, the Vespers are a coven as well as a family. An old bargain protects the town from dark forces, provided three Vesper witches continue to live there. Wren's mother reluctantly agrees to fill the place left by her own mother's death. When she disappears, Wren has to enter a world she has barely begun to understand. Finding her own abilities becomes urgent, because the family arrangement is tied to the safety of everyone around her.
The town's protection depends on the very family whose secrets Wren is struggling to uncover.
That connection makes Sedgwick Cove more than a backdrop. Its traditions, celebrations and hidden history all matter to the danger Wren faces. In Keepers of Forest and Flame, she hopes for a quiet summer of learning magic and visiting the beach. Instead, preparations for a solstice pageant draw her toward another threat. The contrast between familiar small-town activities and the forces beneath them gives the series much of its atmosphere: a community can feel welcoming while still holding things its newest witch doesn't know.
Wren's education continues in Pages of Shadow and Smoke, where a visitor named Jess Ballard arrives with a grimoire supposedly sent by Wren's dead grandmother. The book is cursed, and its arrival raises questions about the source of Sedgwick Cove's magic. With Halloween approaching, Wren must work out how the visitor, the book and the town fit together while protecting her abilities from forces that want them. Learning isn't simply a way to become stronger; it is also a way to recognize what is happening around her.
These are supernatural coming-of-age stories with a mystery running through the magic. Wren is trying to understand her family and find her own place within it while facing a Darkness that threatens both her powers and her home. Begin with Daughters of Sea and Storm, then follow her developing knowledge through Keepers of Forest and Flame, Pages of Shadow and Smoke and Tides of Magic and Memory. The series takes place in Holmes's World of the Gateway, bringing its focus to a young witch and the coastal town whose future is bound to her family.
