The Vanished Books in Order

The Vanished is where Griffith leans most fully into supernatural suspense. The series starts like a mystery, then steadily opens into something bigger and stranger. Missing people, old grief, signs in the sky, objects with dangerous power, and a border between the living world and the dead all sit at the center of these books.

The land matters as much as the plot.

Follow the Crow begins on a remote Navajo reservation in the deep Southwest. Ben Dejooli, a Navajo cop, is still haunted by the disappearance of his little sister Ana six years earlier. The crows that started following him on the day she vanished seem to know something he does not, and that mystery pulls him into a race against time. From the start, the series ties its suspense to loss, family, and the feeling that the world is trying to speak in signs.

Caroline becomes important early as well. In the first books, she is one of the people who can sense that Ben's case is not just a missing-person story. As the series moves into Beyond the Veil, the scale widens. A bell with power over life and death has gone missing, Caroline and Owen search for it across the land of the living, and Ben, now known as the Walker, searches through the land of the dead. What began as one family's pain turns into a struggle over who controls the line between worlds.

That larger supernatural thread keeps growing in The Coyote Way. A rogue spirit breaks through into the living world and takes the form of a coyote, so the danger becomes less about uncovering one old secret and more about preventing fresh harm. At the same time, Caroline and Owen are still trying to build an ordinary life for themselves, which gives the series one of its best tensions. The characters want home, peace, and connection, even while the story keeps shoving them toward roads that are anything but ordinary.

The dead are never as far away as they should be.

What makes the series work is that it keeps one foot in thriller territory. These books have magic, spirits, and eerie crossings between worlds, but they move with the pressure of a chase story. The tone is serious, sometimes sad, often eerie, and deeply rooted in place.
