Series background & context
The Vampire Diaries is the series most people know L.J. Smith for, but the books have their own identity apart from the television adaptation. The original setup is simple and strong. Elena Gilbert is the admired girl in a small town. Stefan Salvatore is the dark new boy with a secret. Damon is the older, more dangerous brother who turns every feeling into a threat. From there, Smith builds a gothic teen romance that keeps getting stranger.
Fell's Church is important. It gives the early books their mood, half ordinary school world, half old haunted place where history keeps pressing into the present. Elena's friends, especially Bonnie and Meredith, matter much more than background decoration. The town feels like a community under siege, not just a stage for the triangle.
The love triangle is still the thing most readers remember, and for good reason. Stefan is restraint, guilt, and longing. Damon is appetite, chaos, and charm. Elena is caught between them, but she is also more ambitious, stubborn, and volatile than people often expect if they only know the screen version. The books are interested in romance, but they are just as interested in power, identity, and how quickly love can turn possessive or destructive.
As the series expands into The Return, The Hunters, and The Salvation, the mythology grows well beyond the original vampire setup. Fox spirits, old powers, hunters, strange realms, and new kinds of enemies all start to crowd the story. Some readers love the pure gothic feel of the first four books best. Others enjoy the way the later novels go bigger and wilder. Either way, the emotional engine stays the same: intense bonds, hard choices, and the feeling that desire can reshape a whole town.
This is a good series if you want supernatural romance with a strong central trio and a lot of momentum. Start with the original four if you want the foundation. Then keep going if you want to see how far Smith's version of Elena, Stefan, and Damon can be pushed into the strange.
